HORSE RIDING

Kyrgyzstan offers amazing landscapes, where you can admire jaw-dropping lakes in this country. Since it is part of the culture to get around by horse in Kyrgyzstan, more and more travel agencies propose horse trekking in Kyrgyzstan to tourists. The Kyrgyzstan trekking tours usually take three or four days. You trek along a lake in small groups (3 to 5 people) with a guide, usually a young guy in his early 20s, who speaks English. The guides might look young, but again don’t worry. They learned how to ride horses right after they learned how to walk! They already have a lot of experience. Before you go on your horse tour in Kyrgyzstan, your guide will teach you how to “control” your horse: how to turn left, turn right, stop, go, gallop, etc… It’s not that easy at first, and you may need to practice a bit.
Moreover, like humans, each horse has its own character! Some of them are docile, and other ones are disobedient to say the least. Anyway, after a few minutes of testing out your new friend (your horse!), you’ll leave your starting point (usually a village next to the lakes) with your group and guide, ready to explore the countryside of Kyrgyzstan on your mount.

SHYRDAK CLASSES

The Kyrgyz began using the felt for weaving of carpets and other things as far back as the antiquity. The development and perfection of every kind of Kyrgyz carpet art were affected by different factors, such as: conditions of life, climate, natural environment and social factor. The most popular kind of felt carpet in Kyrgyzstan up to now is a shyrdak. It is weaved by mosaic technique, which is the most complicated one, but at the same time features with one of the most important characteristics - durability. An average service life period of a shirdak is about 100 years or sometimes even longer Fabrication process of a shirdak carpet is a labour-intensive one, that is why it takes a mistress from 2 to 6 months to weave one carpet subject that she will only be engaged with it, but normally the Kyrgyz women work in groups which mainly consists of the representatives from one family. The shyrdak carpet is one of the most valuable things of the Kyrgyz domestic life that is why a special importance is given to a girl’s dowry which has to comprise indispensably a shirdak carpet. The weaving process of a shirdak carpet is as follows: the carpet is made of two kinds of felt, its upper layer is made from thin felt to which a colored drawing is applied to, and the lower one is made of thick felt of brown or black color. The pieces of the dyed felt are folded and sawn together. The ornament is applied with the help of a piece of chalk and cut with a fine knife. It is interesting that the background and the pattern are almost of the same area, which adds the carpet an inimitable style. One of the elements of carpet technique is stitching - shyryk (which gave rise to word shyrdak) which enhances the carpet durability. The stitching follows the drawing design creating a pattern inside the felt carpet. The size of a shyrdak is about 1.5 to 3m, which is convenient for handling. Among the traditional drawings of a shyrdak are animals, deer horns and inscriptions, which are a coded message to its owner. Nowadays the shyrdak carpets are made in the provinces of Naryn and Issyk–Kul. They are presented to girls as a dowry for their wedding-day. Up to date shyrdak is one of the rarest kind of carpets weaving in Kirgizia.

KUMIS MAKING

Kumis is a fermented dairy product traditionally made from mare's milk. The drink remains important to the peoples of the Central Asian steppes, of Huno-Bulgar, Turkic and Mongol origin: Kazakhs, Bashkirs, Kalmyks, Kyrgyz, Mongols, and Yakuts. Kumis was historically consumed by the Han Chinese of North China as well. Kumis is a dairy product similar to kefir, but is produced from a liquid starter culture, in contrast to the solid kefir "grains". Because mare's milk contains more sugars than cow's or goat's milk, when fermented, kumis has a higher, though still mild, alcohol content compared to kefir. Even in the areas of the world where kumis is popular today, mare's milk remains a very limited commodity. Industrial-scale production, therefore, generally uses cow's milk, which is richer in fat and protein, but lower in lactose than the milk from a horse. Before fermentation, the cow's milk is fortified in one of several ways. Sucrose may be added to allow a comparable fermentation. Another technique adds modified whey to better approximate the composition of mare's milk.
Kumis is made by fermenting raw unpasteurized mare's milk over the course of hours or days, often while stirring or churning. (The physical agitation has similarities to making butter). During the fermentation, lactobacilli bacteria acidify the milk, and yeasts turn it into a carbonated and mildly alcoholic drink. Traditionally, this fermentation took place in horse-hide containers, which might be left on the top of a yurt and turned over on occasion, or strapped to a saddle and joggled around over the course of a day's riding. Today, a wooden vat or plastic barrel may be used in place of the leather container.

YURT BUILDING

YURT BUILDING
Yurts are one of the most essential parts of Kyrgyz culture, and are more than just houses. They represent the family, the earth, and the universe, and cover everything from birth to death. Yurts hold much of Kyrgyz culture, from important rituals and ceremonies, to craftsmanship and traditional artistry.
Nowadays, yurts are not the main form of housing, as most people live in houses and apartments. Some people are still semi-nomadic, taking yurts and herds to the summer pastures during the warmer months. Visitors can stay in yurt camps, which are a comfortable way to experience Kyrgyz culture. Though in some places there might not be running water or electricity, yurts are the best way to experience the hospitality and warmth of Kyrgyz culture.

Kyrgyzstan | So much to discover

Sary Chelek National Park

Sary Chelek Lake is some 1873 meters (6,145 feet) above sea level, and is 7.5 km (4.66 miles) long. Sary Chelek varies in width, from 350 m (1,150 feet) to 1,500 m (4,920 feet), and at its deepest point reaches a depth of 234 m (768 feet), making it the second deepest lake in Kyrgyzstan. The shoreline is deeply indented and lined by steep forested slopes, which descend into the depths of the lake. Shallow areas have developed only in the larger.

Kol Suu Lake

Kel-Suu Lake is rapidly becoming one of Kyrgyzstan’s best-known sites. At 3,514 m (11,529 feet) above sea level, Kel-Suu was only recently formed by a landslide in the 1980s. One side is formed by sheer cliffs, and the other by the Sary-Beles Mountain. Located on the Kurumduk River, the water has a greenish tint, but sometimes in the spring, the whole lake drains, and all that is left is the dry lake bed. Read more in our pedia.

Farytale Canyon

Legends have it that, at one time, the Issyk Kul basin wasn’t filled with a lake, but was home to a number of rich and powerful cities. There is probably some truth in this because under the lake archaeologists have discovered the ruins of several settlements. According to one legend in particular, in one of the cities lived a beautiful girl and a seven headed dragon fell in love with her and pursued her, asking her to marry him.

Tash Rabat Caravansaray

This is a carefully restored stone building that once housed an inn on the Great Silk Road. Its date of origin is strictly unknown - but there is archaeological evidence to suggest that the site was occupied in the 10th century. Set some 15 km up a small, beautiful valley in the foothills of the Tian Shan, embedded against the hillside. There is evidence that it was a place of both rest and worship and would have served to protect caravans to and from China from both the ravages of the weather and of bandits - from before the time of either Tamerlane or Genghis Khan.

Arslanbob Walnut Forest.

Arslanbob is reached from Jalal-Abad via Bazar-Korgon. Kyzylunkyur is 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) away, reachable via Oogon-Talaa, which is situated in the Kara-Unkur valley. The walnut forest is within the 60,000 hectares (150,000 acres) forest situated between the Fergana and Chatkal Mountains. The walnut forest is located at altitudes varying between 1,500 metres (4,900 ft) and 2,000 metres (6,600 ft) above sea level on the Fergana range's south-facing slopes. At 11,000 hectares (27,000 acres), the Arslanbob woodland is the largest walnut grove on Earth.

Eki Naryn Valley

At the intersection of the Naryn river and the other Naryn river, little Еki-Naryn (Эки-Нарын, literally 'two Naryns' – we'll let you figure out where they got the name) draws visitors with its red cliffs and plentiful hiking opportunities around the surrounding mountainsides, and serves as the starting point for several intrepid horse treks organised by CBT Naryn. There's not much in the way of organised tourism, but visitors with a thirst for wandering may well stay twice as long as expected to explore the area.
